Helen asks…

Quotes from “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins?

Do you have any favorite quotes from the Hunger Games? I’m writing a book review on Kindle Games and read it on my Kindle so its kinda hard to skim through the book and find quotes and a page number for parenthetical citation…
Thanks!

I have found some!!

We’re going to be thrown into an arena to fight to the death with Kindle Games. Exactly how am I supposed to work in a thank-you in there? Somehow it just won’t seem sincere if I’m trying to slit his throat. (32)

Effie: “How odd you two find it amusing. You know your mentor is your lifeline to the world in these Games. The one who advises you, lines up your sponsors and dictates the presentation of any gifts. Haymitch can well be the difference between your life and death!”
Just then, Haymitch staggers into the compartment. “I miss supper?” he says in a slurred voice. Then he vomits all over the expensive carpet and falls in the mess.
“So laugh away!” says Effie Trinket. (46)

All of the pieces are still fitting together, but I sense he has a plan forming. He hasn’t accepted his death. He is already fighting hard to stay alive. Which also means that kind Peeta Mellark, the boy who gave me the bread, is fighting hard to kill me. (68)

Peeta: I asked Cinna why they let us up here. Weren’t they worried that some of the tributes might decide to jump right over the side?
Katniss: What’d he say?
Peeta: You can’t. Some kind of electric field throws you back on the roof.
Katniss: Always worried about our safety. (81)

Effie: Just remember, Katniss, you want the audience to like you.
Katniss: And you don’t think they will?
Effie: Not if you glare at them the entire time. Why don’t you save that for the arena? Instead, think of yourself among friends.
Katniss: They’re betting on how long I’ll live! They’re not my friends!
Effie: Well, try and pretend! See, like this. I’m smiling at you even though you’re aggravating me.
Katniss: Yes, it feels very convincing. (115)

The arenas are historic sites, preserved after the Games. Popular destinations for Capitol residents to visit, to vacation. Go for a month, rewatch the Games, tour the catacombs, visit the sites where the deaths took place. You can even take part in reenactments.
They say the food is excellent. (144)

Rue, who when you ask her what she loves most in the world, replies, of all things, “Music.” (211)

Katniss: I guess all those hours decorating cakes paid off.
Peeta: Yes, frosting. The final defence of the dying. (252)

Katniss: Peeta, you said at the interview you’d had a crush on me forever. When did forever start?
Peeta: Oh, let’s see. I guess the first day of school. We were five. You had on a red plaid dress and your hair…it was in two braids instead of one. My father pointed you out when we were waiting to line up.
Katniss: Your father? Why?
Peeta: He said, ‘See that little girl? I wanted to marry her mother, but she ran off with a coal miner.’”
Katniss: What? You’re making that up!
Peeta: No, true story. And I said, ‘A coal miner? Why did she want a coal miner if she could’ve had you?’ And he said, ‘Because when he sings…even the birds stop to listen.’” (300)

Peeta has always had enough to eat. But there’s something kind of depressing about living your life on stale bread, the hard, dry loaves that no one else wanted. One thing about us, since I bring our food home on a daily basis, most of it is so fresh you have to make sure it isn’t going to make a run for it. (310) [I just find this hilarious every time I read it…]

I have about five minutes to eat a bowl of hot grain and stew before the prep team descends. All I have to say is, “The crowd loved you!” and it’s unnecessary to speak for the next couple of hours. (366) [You’d get this if you knew the prep team]

I have to write a product review…ideas?

So im in HS and i have to write a product review for my journalism class. It can be virtually anything (school appropriate). I need ideas because none of mine seem to be that great.

Prerequisites:
*needs to be within interest of teens like Kindle Games
*i have to interview 2 people (so it has to be a product that i can easily find someone who uses it often)
*it has to be either a product review or product comparison

My ideas:
iPad vs kindle (but i dont know anyone who uses these so i cant do that)
Game Apps: Ovenbreak vs Run Stick Run
Brownie mix: Duncan Hines vs Betty Crocker (other then taste i dont think HS students would be very interested)
Types of popcorn?: Orvell Reddenbocker vs Pop Secret (or something like that)
Brownies (again:))- a box mix vs Home made brownies

What if I did the app Angry Birds? Should I do a comparison w/ that and if so what could I compare it to, it has to be similar

*If i do food it would be a blind taste test
*I only have a short period of time so i cant do like Pro Active vs Clean and clear

TY:)

Maybe you could compare angry birds to the new game tiny wings from Kindle Games? Apparently it’s meant to be just as good so maybe try that :) x

Sandra asks…

what e-reader should I buy?

I am thinking of buying a e-reader and I have it between the kindle 3g, nook 3g or the nook color.. witch one is the best?… I like to read at night and enjoy being read to. I have bad eye sight and not sure if starting at a screen reading could make it worse. I play Kindle games and only a few very bright colors hurt. I only want the 3g to check my email and maybe a little web browsing not much- i don’t even use my phone for that… when I visit family they don’t have internet. I am leaning more towards the kindle 3g because of the reviews I have read. I know the nook color cost a lot more, but is it really worth it?… please help!– I just want more opinions.

Admin answers:

I would go for the kindle 3g for sure.  Amazon has the best features, usability and selection. The black/white nook is OK but I would totally avoid the color nook. The color nook has a backlit screen which can cause eyestrain in many people.

Amazon´s new Kindle DX

Surfing with the 3g kindle is great. I use it to read news/blogs/facebook/check email etc.
Getting it for free with no monthly fees is hard to beat.

What tablet/device should I buy?

O.k. I currently own a Zune HD and its future doesn’t look good. Apparently is dying. So I’m thinking about getting a tablet or device that meets my requirements:
1. A fast processor, something that is relatively fast.
2. Has internet. Fast internet, not load and freeze.
3. Apps and games. Something for entertainment
4. Movies, pictures, and music. I need it to be able to run media like the ones listed. Music is the most important to me really, I’d like it to have speakers too, but that’s not really important.
I’ve been recommending the Amazon Kindle Fire, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and the Latte ICE Smart.
The galaxy tab and latte ice seem to have some bad reviews, but I’m not totally sure which one to buy. I don’t care if its a tablet. As long as its screen isn’t tiny. And I love touch devices. it has to be portable enough for me to travel with. My budget is no more than $300.
Thanks.

Admin answers:

Lack of microSD slot means that if you decide to root your Kindle Fire, you’ll have to root the actual device thus there will be no coming back. On Nook Color, you can make it boot from a “rooted” microSD card and if you want to get back to the original Nook you can just take out the card and reboot. Kindle Fire it is stuck with 6 GB usable internal storage which is great for Kindle Games unlike Nook Color that can get up to 32 GB card in. To get to the promised Cloud space of Amazon you need to have Wi-Fi connection available (thus not when traveling) and you can only store content you get from Amazon there, not other files. Quoting Amazon on Kindle Fire: “Free cloud storage for all Amazon content”. The stats of how long the battery can last (Kindle Fire theory is 7.5 hours) are taken with Wi-Fi off. It will last only about 3 hours if you use it to access content from their Cloud storage over Wi-Fi. Amazon confirmed that you cannot download anything to Kindle Fire outside US. Amazon said it will reject many apps that will include those that rely on a gyroscope, camera, WAN module, Bluetooth, microphone, GPS, or micro SD. Apps are also forbidden from using Google’s Mobile Services (and in-app billing), which, if included, will have to be “gracefully” removed. In terms of actual content, Amazon has outlawed all apps that change the tablet’s UI in any way (including theme- or wallpaper-based tools), as well as any that demand root.
